We visited Talk Story Bookstore in Hanapepe on the island of Kaua’i to get their favorite book recommendations for visiting the islands. Coined as “the Westernmost Bookstore in the United States”, Talk Story sits in the historic artist town on the main drag. We loved the local feel, the vintage vinyls and of course, the reads. Make sure to check out their list of Rare Hawaiian Books, and best selling books in their store about the islands.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Left Bank by Agnes Poirier “I devoured this remarkable portrait of Paris during the forties.” - Eloise of Shakespeare and Co bookstore in Paris Weaving together the fascinating lives and opinions of characters such as Beckett, Picasso, Sartre, de Beauvoir, Camus, Flanner, the book explores the complexities of the occupation and includes anecdotes like how masterpieces from the Louvre were smuggled out. With the end of the war, there was an "orgy of fraternity" as de Beauvoir described it and no-one could be indifferent, everything was political. This is an enthralling read, it left me with a new appreciation of what Paris stands for and how close it came to destruction</image:caption>

<image:caption>The city of Istanbul remains one of the inspirations behind Vacation Reads. This ancient yet modern city is truly eye opening, marrying modern Western with traditional Eastern cultures in a mega metropoliis spanning Asia and Europe. Ancient mosques, colorful sunrises and warm scents drift across the Bosphorus while millions of residents and visitors navigate the markets and waterways. We worked with the charming Fil Books in the Galata neighborhood of Istanbul to gather their best recommendations to accompany the experience of the city. With a focus on media and photos, these recommendations bring to life the world of modern creative expression in the city, with an ode to the unmistakable history at every turn.</image:caption>

      <image:title>London - London</image:title>
<image:caption>London has been called the literary capital of the world. There is an energy in the air of history, relevance, culture and creativity that has led to thousands of authors taking pen to paper in the flats of the West End, the homes of Hackney and everywhere in between. We paired with London’s oldest and most iconic bookstore Hatchard’s, to get a variety of their most recent, classic and timely recommendations for the modern reader. With almost 225 years of leading in the London literary scene, Hatchard’s covers all categories with what will compliment this world city best.</image:caption>

<image:title>San Francisco - The City by the Bay</image:title>
<image:caption>San Francisco’s rich history of counter culture, beatnik poetry, hippie revolutions and LGBT activism are somewhat stories of the past these days, but are still in the city’s DNA. Modern San Francisco is a hub of technology, innovation and invention but still keeps its alt culture roots in the many independent bookstores across the different neighborhoods. To collect our recommendations for San Francisco, we tapped into the community that frequents some of the local bookstores around town, and had a great conversation with friends of Dog Eared Books in the Mission district. This bookstore has been a neighborhood favorite for almost 20 years. Here’s what we found.</image:caption>

      <image:title>San Francisco</image:title>
<image:caption>Season of the Witch by David Talbot If you’re looking for the quintessential novel about San Francisco from the 1960s through the 1980s, look no further than this SF classic. This book makes most lists for a reason- it brings to life the age that made the city famous, with characters like Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, Harvey Milk and Haight Ashbury. “A piece that personifies but doesn’t romanticize- basically this book is all real and sometimes not so pretty. Flowers in your hair but crime on the streets, this doesn’t miss a beat”.</image:caption>

      <image:title>San Francisco</image:title>
<image:caption>North Beach Girl by John Trinian To tourists, North Beach is colloquially known as the “Little Italy”, filled with Italian restaurants, cafes and wine bars. To locals, it’s where you go for a wild night out. Strip clubs, neon and cocktails paint the night. This book is a rare one that has been out of print for decades but still available if you look. The story reads like the time it was written- in the 1960s- with hip slang and casual stories of sex and wild scenarios.</image:caption>

      <image:title>San Francisco</image:title>
<image:caption>The Mayor of Castro Street by Randy Shilts The Castro district of San Francisco would not be what it is today without Harvey Milk’s influence. Everywhere you walk, there are reminders of his influence- Harvey’s restaurant, Harvey Milk Memorial library and the historic camera shop that started it all are just a few. The epic rise and tragic fall of the local icon is an inspirational story that still gets honored throughout the neighborhood. “You cannot talk about the LGBT movement in SF without Harvey Milk playing a critical role. His attachements to the neighborhood and the cause landed him in politics where we found out that even in a progressive city like San Francisco, the fight was nowhere near over”.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin This multi- installment collection of wild, outrageous and loving stories of the goings on around town is popular for a reason. The times were changing and through these stories, we can dream about a nostalgic time that many of us have only ever heard about. “Many people read these stories and search out the different locations mentioned to dream about the history of what went on there. With highlights on the Spanish, French and African influences, The Accidental City helps to understand why and how NOLA ended up as it is- arguably a city that shouldn’t exist. Filled with “stories of flamboyant prostitutes, crusading moral reformers, dissolute jazzmen, ruthless Mafiosi, venal politicians, and one extremely violent serial killer, all battling for primacy in a wild and wicked city unlike any other in the world,” this is one not to miss.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Life Among the Savages is a collection of comic essays by Shirley Jackson originally published in women’s magazines. Rather than a memoir Life Among the Savages reads as a series of episodes focusing on Jackson's chaotic family life: children squabbling, disagreements with other parents, daily chores, and family dinners. Jackson renders the cacophony of her family, tinging everyday activities or conversations with a does of absurdity. Her children's back and forth are as entertaining as they are bewildering.”</image:caption>
